As part of our commitment to supporting artists at every stage of their career, Global Grooves has supported Emily Wood, Artistic Director of Cabasa Carnival Arts, and two of our Future Leaders graduates, Kate Rothery and Rowan Taylor, with return flights to support their international development work.
They are travelling to Trinidad & Tobago this month to deliver a series of workshops, mas camps and events in partnership with The Carnival Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, and The University School.
Following our Creating Carnival Trinidad programme in December 2015, Emily has been invited back to work with a class of young people at the school to create carnival backpacks inspired by butterflies native to Trinidad & Tobago.
The theme is ‘Small Is Beautiful’, inspired by the hummingbirds the children studied during a visit to a local eco-centre.
It’s the group’s first ever entry to the Red Cross Kiddies Carnival!
Whilst in Trinidad, they will also be working in collaboration with Jouvay Ayiti and Arts-in-Action to take part in their intensive 10 day course in Carnival with organised field trips, visiting Mas camps and playing Mas in Carnival 2017 as well as a healthy dose of ‘liming‘. 🙂
We can’t wait to follow their journey and learn from their new found skills and inspiration on their return to the UK.
As part of their trip Cabasa have set up a crowdfunder to help support the young peoples entry into the Red Cross Kiddies Carnival.
