Percussion - 2021/22 cohort

Hi, I’m Eve, part of the Future Leaders 2021/22 cohort.

Music has always played a massive role in my life, I spent my weekends singing in choral choirs and learning classical violin from an early age, constantly annoying my parents and that escalated even more three years ago when I started drumming. Since 2018, I have joined Runaway Samba, a Brazilian Samba in which I primarily play high surdo and I am currently learning repinique and snare. One of my favourite drumming experiences was a project called ‘Doorstep Gigs’ where the Youth Leadership Team performed over 40 gigs to care home residents, key workers and those shielding during the pandemic. From this the amazing team were finalists for the Special Award for Youth Achievement by The Journal Culture Awards 2021.

I have also recently joined Baque de Ogum, a Maracatu band led through Jack Drum Arts where I play Alfaia. My favourite Baque de Ogum performance was at the Whitley Bay Carnival where the streets where filled with incredibly talented musicians and puppets.

Since lockdown 2020, I have also been involved in a Brazilian Samba Folk Fusion Band called Nordestinos, which involved the collaboration of Runaway Samba and DrumDin to perform Northern folk songs to original samba music. Nordestinos had its debut at Crook Winter Light Parade, where the snow played a magnificent role in making the whole performance even more magical.

Through my involvement in Jack Drum I have helped out in workshops and sessions. I am currently assisting in Get Set Samba – a Brazilian Samba beginners band for ages 10+. During these sessions I have begun learning snare and I’m loving seeing other people fall in love with drumming like I did.

A fun fact about me is that I love drumming as an elf and surprising kids with secret doorstep gigs for Christmas or maybe it’s just because I like glitter.

Drumming has become a much larger part of my life then I ever expected it to be but I do not regret it one bit and the best part is that its family friendly and I get to do it with my awesome mum!
