This first in a series of courses will focus on developing techniques for several Brazilian percussion instruments and their function within the percussion ensemble. Led by internationally renowned percussionist, Leon Patel, we will study common techniques, styles and trends for each instrument and discuss how they fit within percussion arrangements and how they work along-side other instruments within the bateria (percussion group).
By the end of this one day course participants will have developed 1-2 rhythms on each instrument with ‘breaks’ and will have a greater understanding of their function within a Brazilian percussion group. Towards the end of the course we will bring each element together to produce a short arrangement using at least three different instruments.
Instruments for this course will include:
• Caixa or ‘snare drum’ used in Samba and Samba Reggae
• Surdo de Corte (or number three, high surdo, ‘cutador’ etc) for Samba and Samba Reggae
• Tamborim – for Samba / Axé Novo
Time permitting we may add extra elements such as Timbau or Repinique.
Don’t worry if your favourite instrument is not listed here. We plan to deliver future courses to cover all the instruments within the Bateria and beyond.
This course is designed for *beginner to intermediate players although there will be limited spaces for the more *advanced percussionist wishing to learn more about the theory of percussion arrangements and how to apply this to their writing and directing.
*Please contact us in advance if you are a more experienced percussionist wanting to join this course.
*For beginners some experience of percussion is recommended.
